MALAWI JUDICIAL COMPLEX PLAN & LANDSCAPE DESIGN
Services: Landscape Master Planning, Detailed Design
Client: Government of Malawi
Status:Under Construction
This project involves the landscape design for the Malawi Judicial Complex, located in the government administrative area of Lilongwe, the capital of Malawi. The design theme, “Water Reflects the Law, Culture Lights the Courtyard,” integrates local natural features and cultural elements to create a modern landscape that embodies judicial solemnity and humanistic care. Through terraced gardens, water features, landscape walls, and lighting columns, the design echoes the imagery of Lake Malawi and mountainous terrain, symbolizing the fairness and order of the law. The project includes functional zones such as plazas, parking, and leisure areas, aiming to enhance the experience for visitors, staff, and the public.
The landscape design deeply integrates site conditions with the architectural character of the judicial complex, addressing elevation challenges and functional needs through multi-layered spatial strategies. The design extracts regional cultural symbols such as Lake Malawi and Chongoni Rock Art, translating them into modern landscape vocabulary—such as curved walls, reflective pools, and terraced platforms—enhancing place identity while metaphorically representing judicial transparency and cultural heritage.
Functionally, the project is organized into distinct zones including the main entrance plaza, central water feature area, ecological leisure zone, and parking areas, with clear and user-friendly circulation. Materials such as local granite and permeable pavers are selected for durability and sustainability. Specialized designs cover signage, lighting, furniture, and planting, collectively creating a solemn, open, and welcoming judicial environment that reflects the professionalism and cultural sensitivity of China’s foreign aid projects.
